The rebirth of an app: a look at the revision of STRG-Schulapp with Android Studio and Java

The large-scale project of the STRG school app is entering the next round. In the course of major redesign measures, I completely redesigned the school app of my former secondary school. The application now has class-specific substitution plans, a customized calendar, news functions, a vacation radar and, last but not least, the long-awaited dark mode for Android devices. Let's take a closer look!

Background: The decision to redesign

The decision to redesign the app was driven by the ever-growing user base and the changing needs of the community. With the goal of providing a more user-friendly, feature-rich and engaging app, the decision was made: a fresh start with Android Studio and Java.

Development with Android Studio and Java

The choice of Android Studio as the development environment and Java as the programming language proved to be spot on. This combination not only enabled smooth development, but also a wide range of functions that took the app to a new level.

New functions at a glance

1. class-specific substitution plans

The app now offers the option of calling up class-specific substitution plans. This allows students and teachers to search specifically for the substitution hours for their class, making information retrieval more efficient.

2. calendar function

An integrated calendar makes it easier for users to keep track of important dates. School events, exams and other events can be conveniently managed and displayed in the app.

3. news functions

The app supports the retrieval of the latest news from the Rhöngymnasium website.

4. vacation radar

By integrating a vacation API, the current vacation schedule is automatically displayed. This ensures clear planning and prevents surprises regarding school-free days.

5. dark mode and integration

The introduction of dark mode was a long-awaited feature. Now users can use the app in an eye-friendly dark mode. The integration is seamless and enables convenient customization to the user's personal preferences.

Conclusion: A new chapter begins

The redesign of the STRG-Schulapp with Android Studio marks a milestone in its development. The added features, from class-specific substitution plans to dark mode, make the app not only more modern, but also more feature-rich. These improvements are the result of careful planning and a desire to meet the needs of users.
